For more than five years, Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Athey, has welcomed incoming sixth grade students with the gift of a new book of their own. What began as a simple idea has become a tradition that encourages reading and helps students build personal libraries of their own.
Each year, 6th Grade students are invited to browse a collection of more than 200 titles and select a book that interests them. The choices span a wide range of genres, reading levels, and topics, ensuring that every student can find a story that speaks to them.
"I want students to have books in their homes," said Mrs. Athey. "When children have access to books that they choose themselves, they are more likely to read for pleasure." The opportunity to select a title based on personal interests gives them a sense of ownership and excitement about reading.
As another school year begins, Mrs. Athey continues her mission of putting books into the hands of young readers.
