6th Grade Science students in Ms. Kessler's classes investigated the Food Chain and Energy Flow in an Ecosystem with a lab that involved looking and categorizing the bones found in the pellet droppings of owls. Undigestible bones of the prey owls eat remain in these pellets. By separating the bones from the rest of the pellets, the students could see which and how many types of prey animals the owl had eaten lately. Great work, Cardinals!

Students in Mrs. Dudley's math class spent this week exploring the concept of slope and comparing the rate of change in differing representations. One activity involved finding representations around the room and finding and comparing slope. Another activity involved rolling dice to graph lines and comparing the rate of change of the line to another representation -- a table or an equation. Nice work, Cardinals!

Let's Go, Cardinals! Students at SMS showed their spirit today during a school- time football game. We had the choir, the band, the cheerleaders and the student body supporting our team. There was cheering and Kona ice and candy and camaraderie and FOOTBALL. Earlier in the day, the Pep Rally was filled with games and cheer! Cardinals - showing school spirit!!

8th graders in Ms Longnecker's Science room put their engineering skills to use by building pumpkins stands . The design focused on sustainability in construction while they learned about material properties, engineering design and the hypothesize, test, revise, retest cycle of the Scientific Method. The goal was a stand that could support a 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 pound pumpkin. Creative ideas abounded! Great job, Cardinals!

Ms. MacKinnon's art classes are making low-relief sculptures in class this week. The classes are creating landscapes, cell depictions and more free flowing sculpture depending on grade level. They design, hot glue the relief structure, paint it black and then in oil pastels to complete the work. The results are beautiful and creative. Way to go, Cardinals!

Ms. Kessler's students used the Scientific Method in a Skittles experiment this week. They asked the question of which color was most common, researched and made a hypothesis. Then came the experiment where, working in pairs , they totaled colors and recorded the data. To analyze the results, they created bar graphs depicting the contents of their bags. Conclusions were then made. Well done, Cardinals!

Mrs. French's 6th grade ELA classes are published authors! During a unit on Poetry, students journeyed outside to take in the sights and sounds of nature. Using those thoughts for inspiration, they wrote and illustrated a nature Haiku, a customary subject for this form of poem. This week, the students received a bound book of their poems and those of their classmates - what a treasure! Great work, Cardinals!

Mrs. Schriever's Science classes were "rocketing" into learning about Newton's 3rd Law this week by launching water and air propelled rockets and measuring the results. The activity combined several science and math skills in addition to Newton's Law - the Scientific Method as they made predictions, performed trials, recorded data and synthesized results; math skills as they used triangles to measure the altitude of the rocket launch; and data skills as they identified the independent and dependent variables and outliers. These "blast-offs" were a blast! Way to go, Cardinals!

Shepherdstown Middle School cheered on Shepherdstown Elementary students during their annual Story Book Parade. Our Cardinals were proud to see their siblings, friends and former teachers marching through the street in the costumes of their favorite book characters! Clapping and shouting of names of characters abounded. It was a real treat; thanks Road Runners!
